Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's Raises More than $445,000 in Portland
Wendy’s Walkers Named Top Fundraising Team at Portland Walk to End Alzheimer’s
Portland, Ore., October 25, 2017 – More than 3,000 residents from the Portland metro area joined the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s in the fight to end Alzheimer’s disease on September 10 at Portland International Raceway. Participants raised more than $445,000 to fund Alzheimer's care, support and research programs.
“We are sincerely grateful to the Portland community for its passion and commitment to the fight to end Alzheimer’s,” said Tracy Morgan, executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association Oregon Chapter. “It is inspiring to see Oregonians gathering together to raise funds and awareness for this devastating disease.”
Oregon Walk Director Kara Griffey said walk teams will continue to raise funds over the next several months.
“Just because the walk is over doesn’t mean fundraising efforts stop. We’re hoping to reach even further and provide a greater impact by raising an additional $195,000 by December 15,” Griffey said.
Wendy’s Walkers was the top fundraising team at this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising more than $23,000. Team captain, Wendy Bond, has been involved with the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Portland for 26 years. She currently serves as an Alzheimer’s Ambassador, serves on the Oregon Chapter’s Leadership Board of Directors and co-facilitates a support group and a local Memories in the Making art program. Wendy has lost four family members to Alzheimer’s disease, including her mom.
In Oregon alone, there are more than 63,000 people aged 65 and older living with the disease and 181,000 unpaid caregivers. In the United States, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, the sixth-leading cause of death and the only disease among the top 10 causes that cannot be cured, prevented or even slowed. Additionally, more than 15 million family and friends provide care to people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
